GPSR for Shopify web shops

For distance sales (Article 19 GPSR), a Shopify product page for a consumer product must show the manufacturer details: name, trade name or brand, postal address and electronic address. If the manufacturer is outside the EU, the name, postal address and electronic address of the responsible person in the EU (Article 16 GPSR) are added. The page also shows the product identification and the warnings and safety information in Dutch. For warnings, Shopify has a standard Disclosures metafield with its own theme block or section; the other data sits where the shop puts it (description or metafields). On your Shopify product pages, MDC Systems checks the eight GPSR check points, based on the GPSR information requirements (Article 19 GPSR), and delivers remediation files that fit Shopify.

Where it lives on Shopify

A Shopify product page is built from the product record and the theme. Which place you choose depends on your catalogue and theme.

Product record
Title, description, media, variants with SKU and barcode (EAN/GTIN), vendor, product type and tags.
Description
A rich text field; manufacturer details and warnings fit here as a fixed text block at the bottom: visible, but not structured.
Metafields
Structured data goes into metafields (Settings → Custom data → Products): one field per item, such as manufacturer, address or warning; filled per product, with the same values across a whole product family.
Theme sections and blocks
Online Store 2.0 themes, such as Dawn, show product information in sections and blocks, connected to a metafield through a dynamic source. Without that connection, a filled metafield does not appear on the page.
CSV export and import
You export and import products as CSV. That way you fill descriptions and, depending on the setup, metafield values in bulk.

What is often missing

The same open items recur in Shopify catalogues.

  1. 1The vendor field holds a brand name, but the manufacturer's postal address and electronic address appear nowhere.
  2. 2The manufacturer is outside the EU, but the name, postal address and electronic address of the responsible person in the EU (Article 16 GPSR) are missing.
  3. 3Warnings appear only in English in the supplier text, not in Dutch on the page.
  4. 4The type or batch number is missing; only the shop's own SKU is listed on the variant.
  5. 5Metafields are filled, but the theme does not show them: the block is not connected to a dynamic source.

How MDC handles this

MDC Systems works in three steps, per product family: same manufacturer, same document set, same safety information. Not per SKU.

  1. 1

GPSR Readiness Check — €249 excl. VAT

You supply a Shopify product export, the supplier documents and your role information. MDC Systems analyses the catalogue per product family, examines three product profiles and delivers a Readiness report as PDF: what is ready and what is missing, open items, a binding price and phased plan. The €249 is credited within 30 days against a follow-up.

  2. 2

Fix Sprint — from €990 excl. VAT

Pilot Fix Sprint €990, Standard Fix Sprint €1,490, excl. VAT. MDC Systems puts the data in the right place per product family; if an item is missing, one request and one reminder go to the supplier, then the item stays open with a concrete next step. Lead time: 5 working days from Intake Complete, the moment the catalogue export, supplier documents and role information are received. Waiting time for suppliers does not count.

  3. 3

Operations Care — €199 per month excl. VAT

Each month MDC Systems checks your product pages against the GPSR check points. You receive the open-items overview and an alert when something changes.

For Shopify, MDC Systems delivers a CSV with the columns to fill per product (description or metafield values), ready for import, plus text blocks for the description or a theme block; you enter them yourself, unless agreed otherwise.

What MDC does not do

  • Legal advice
  • Responsible person in the EU / authorised representative
  • Test or certify products
  • Write marketing or SEO copy
  • Decide whether a product is safe

Questions about GPSR and Shopify

  1. Do I need to install a Shopify app for GPSR?

Not necessarily. The mandatory data can be shown with Shopify's standard tools: description, metafields or a theme block. The CSV and text blocks from MDC Systems match those; the data itself comes from the manufacturer or supplier.

  2. Description or metafields: where do I put manufacturer details in Shopify?

Both are possible. For a small catalogue the description is often the appropriate place: a fixed text block at the bottom of every page. For larger catalogues metafields are more practical: each item in its own field and, depending on the setup, updatable in bulk. MDC Systems delivers both forms.

  3. How does MDC Systems handle variants in Shopify?

Variants of one product usually share manufacturer, document set and safety information and then fall into the same product family; twenty sizes of the same jacket are one family. MDC Systems checks and fixes per product family, not per SKU. The price depends on product families, suppliers and document complexity.

  4. Which export from Shopify does MDC Systems need?

MDC Systems needs the product export as CSV, with all products and variants. If your shop already uses metafields for manufacturer or safety data, say so at intake. Together with the supplier documents and role information, that is what MDC Systems needs for Intake Complete.

  5. Does MDC Systems enter the data into my Shopify shop itself?

Not by default. MDC Systems delivers a CSV, ready for import, and text blocks to paste; you or your agency enter them. Entry by MDC Systems is possible if agreed in advance. Missing data is not filled in but remains an open item.
