GPSR for WooCommerce web shops
GPSR, Regulation (EU) 2023/988, applicable since 13 December 2024, covers consumer products offered in the EU, including online. For distance sales the product page shows the name, trade name or brand of the manufacturer with postal address and electronic address; for a manufacturer outside the EU, also the name, postal address and electronic address of the responsible person in the EU (Article 16 GPSR). It also shows the product identification (image, type and a batch, serial or type number) and the warnings and safety information in Dutch. Where this data lives in WooCommerce depends on your setup and theme. MDC Systems checks this per product family against eight GPSR check points, based on the GPSR information requirements (Article 19 GPSR).
Where it lives on WooCommerce
WooCommerce stores product data in several places.
- Long and short description
- Free text without a fixed structure. A block with the manufacturer details and warnings in Dutch fits here.
- Product data: SKU and GTIN/EAN
- The SKU sits under Inventory; newer versions of WooCommerce also have a GTIN, UPC, EAN or ISBN field in the same panel. The template determines whether the code appears on the product page.
- Attributes
- Global or per product, visible on the Additional information tab if the theme shows it. A self-created attribute, for example Manufacturer or Type number, is recognisable and exportable.
- Custom fields (post meta)
- Your own field with a name and value per product, for example for the responsible person in the EU. Visible if the template shows it; that often requires a plugin or theme code.
- Variations
- A lamp in three colours is one variable product; each variation can have its own identification. If the variations form one product family, manufacturer details and safety information apply to all variations together.
What is often missing
Five points often missing or incorrect in WooCommerce catalogues.
- 1The brand is on the page, but the manufacturer's postal address and electronic address are not.
- 2The manufacturer is outside the EU and the responsible person in the EU (Article 16 GPSR) is not named anywhere.
- 3Warnings appear only in the supplier's English-language PDF, not in Dutch on the product page.
- 4The type or batch number sits in a custom field the template does not show.
- 5Attributes were created per product instead of globally, so one manufacturer appears in several spellings in the export.
How MDC handles this
Three steps, prices excl. VAT. MDC Systems works per product family, not per individual SKU.
- 1
GPSR Readiness Check — €249 excl. VAT
You supply the WooCommerce product export and supplier documents. MDC Systems analyses the catalogue per product family, examines three product profiles and maps who is manufacturer, importer or distributor, what is ready and what is missing. The Readiness report (PDF) contains the open items and a binding price for the follow-up; the €249 is credited within 30 days against a follow-up.
- 2
Fix Sprint — from €990 excl. VAT
Pilot Fix Sprint €990, Standard Fix Sprint €1,490, both excl. VAT. Lead time 5 working days from Intake Complete. MDC Systems prepares the data per product family for the right fields. If a supplier does not respond: one request, one reminder, then an open item with a concrete next step. Nothing is invented.
- 3
Operations Care — €199 per month excl. VAT
Monthly check of your product pages against the GPSR check points, with an open-items overview and an alert when something changes.
For WooCommerce, MDC Systems delivers a CSV in the column layout of the built-in importer (description, attributes, meta fields) plus ready-made text blocks; you run the import yourself, unless agreed otherwise.
What MDC does not do
- Legal advice
- Responsible person in the EU / authorised representative
- Test or certify products
- Write marketing or SEO copy
- Decide whether a product is safe
Frequently asked questions about GPSR and WooCommerce
Where do I put the manufacturer details in WooCommerce?
That depends on your setup. The manufacturer's name, postal address and electronic address go in the long description, as an attribute or in a custom field the template shows. MDC Systems records per product family which place you use and delivers the data in that column.
Where do I put the EAN and type number in WooCommerce?
SKU and, in newer versions of WooCommerce, GTIN, UPC, EAN or ISBN sit in the Product data panel. The type, batch or serial number goes in an attribute or custom field.
Can I fill GPSR data in WooCommerce in bulk via the CSV import?
Yes. The built-in WooCommerce importer (the Import button on the Products → All Products page) reads columns for description, attributes and meta fields. MDC Systems delivers the remediation CSV in that column layout, so you update the data with that importer.
Do I need a plugin for GPSR data in WooCommerce?
Not necessarily. Description, attributes and custom fields are standard; a separate tab or block for safety information often requires a plugin or theme code. MDC Systems delivers the text blocks regardless of the chosen solution.
How does MDC Systems handle variable products?
A variable product counts as one product family as long as the manufacturer, document set and safety information match. The identification (SKU, EAN, type number) can differ per variation; manufacturer details and warnings are delivered at product level. The price is based on product families, suppliers and document complexity, not the number of variations.
